Grace's Essay - Pollyanna

Discuss how Pollyanna changes the outlook of one character in this story. Use specific examples from the text whenever possible.

I think Pollyanna helps Mr. Pendleton the best. Mr. Pendleton at the beginning could be described as sour. He was also unoptomistic (pessimistic). An example is "Yes, yes. Well there's one thing I know all right, and that is I'm flat on my back right here this minute, and that I might have to stay here - till doomsday, I guess." He has tight patience for anyone but Pollyanna.

Mr. Pendleton has no social skills which makes him cross. He meets Pollyanna while on a walk. He doesn't really like Pollyanna at first. He is lonely, an example is when he says it takes a woman's hand and heart or a child's presence to make a home.

Mr. Pendleton breaks his leg and can't find anything to be glad about. Pollyanna tells him that broken legs get better, but lifelong invalids don't. Mr. Pendleton realizes that he can play the "Glad Game" finds more ways to be glad. He wants to adopt Pollyanna to help him be glad always, but she decides that Aunt Polly needs her more and asks him to consider adopting Jimmy Bean instead.

In the end of the story, Pollyanna helps Mr. Pendleton find a way to make his house a home. He adopts Jimmy Bean for the child's presence. He also learns to be kind, for example he tries to help Pollyanna to be glad after her accident.

Kids Can Eat Healthy Snacks!

by

Grace Elizabeth Denson

Snacks, snacks, snacks! Kids love to eat snacks! Some snacks are healthy, but a lot of them aren’t. But it’s not too hard to eat healthy snacks. A kid can eat healthy snacks easily!

Why should kids eat healthy snacks? One reason is sugar affects your body with more hunger and builds fat deposits. Another reason is unhealthy snacks affect your brain. With sugar in the blood stream it can make you not think clearly. Sugar can also make tooth decay, so you may need fillings and crowns. One final reason is that eating unhealthy snacks can cause you health problems when you’re older, like diabetes and heart attacks.

How can kids know if their snacks are healthy? You have to read the nutrition label to find out how healthy a snack is. Healthy snacks have low total fat, between 0-4 grams a serving. Kids should also look for high vitamins. Good snacks have 2-4 grams of protein, and also 1 or more grams of dietary fiber.

But hold it! Kids don’t have to eat only carrots and celery sticks for every snack! Have you ever tried a “Quaker” granola bar? I recommend the peanut butter-chocolate chip flavor. Another great idea is a yogurt parfait: layers of yogurt with strawberries and fruit then topped with granola, crunchy and sweet. Oranges are very sweet and full of vitamins. Pineapples are sweet, tangy, and really good fresh. Just keep trying different healthy foods until you find several you like.

For healthier snack ideas, kids can check the local library, check the internet, or ask friends. Eating healthy makes your body feel better and have more energy. You also might have fun discovering new foods. Kids can eat healthy snacks easily!
