Christmas 2011

Christmas 2011 - The best one yet!
John had to work Christmas Eve - to make sure that Santa got across the border okay.  After he got home we had just enough time for his homemade cinnamon rolls before church at 10 am.  The weather in Arizona was quite nice - about 50 degrees and sunny by 9 am.

With John's parents we arrived back home around noon and started the ham for dinner, then we finally got into opening the presents.  Sorry, I forgot pictures of all the food!

There were a LOT of presents and happy faces!

Grace and Joseph got bikes from Santa/Daddy and Mommy.   By the 3rd day, they were both riding around like pros!  And Katharine was upgraded to Grace's old scooter.

Halloween

It's been a fun Halloween day!

This morning I had an ultrasound - baby "Pequeno" is doing great!  Weighs in at 14 oz., Length is 10 inches, heart is pumping and looks perfect, all body structures are looking great, the head and neck measurements were perfect and so the risk of genetic defect is down to very minimal...... and.... John was right (again, 4th time he's called it right)..... It's a boy!  He'll be named John Patrick Denson :o)

Now it's afternoon and the kids are all dressed in their costumes - Grace is a ballerina, Joseph is an Indian, and Katharine is a cowgirl.

Persuasive Essay - Grace 5th Grade

An Australian Visit

By Grace Denson, Age 9
Composition – 5th grade
Unit 3 – Lesson 6 – Persuasive writing prompt

Prompt:  Your family is planning a vacation.  Think of the place you would most like to visit.  Write an essay in which you convince your family to visit the place you want to go.

A trip to Australia is a dream vacation.  The trip will cost a lot, but it will be worth it!  There is something for everyone to see.  There are many plants, trees, and orchids to see.  Australia has many famous sights: the Sydney Opera House, the beautiful beaches, the Harbour, and the list seems endless.  For animal lovers, there are wombats, kangaroos, koalas, and platypus.  And best of all we have family to visit.  It would be the most memorable vacation ever.

Dad would love all of the plants!  Many plants are native only to Australia.  There are many unique native species and 79% of them can only be found in Australia.  The Australian blackwood tree grows there, as well as Australian sandalwood, and lots of different varieties of pines.  The kangaroo paw, iris, and orchid flowers would be beautiful to see and photograph.  The Royal Botanical Garden is the #3 best place to visit in Sydney with 45,154 species of plants.

Mom, Australia has many sights that you would love to see, like the Sydney Opera House, the clean, clear beaches, and the Fish Market.  Katharine would love the Sydney Aquarium.  And the Great Barrier Reef is something only found in Australia.  I would love to see it.

There are lots of animals unique to Australia that we could see.  There are wombats, koalas, kangaroos, and platypus.  Each and every bird is so different in the way it looks and the sounds it makes.  Featherdale Park, Taronga Zoo, and the Sydney Wildlife World are great places to see all of these animals and more.

Australians really know how to eat.  There are many restaurants in Australia, and many interesting dishes we could try.  We have family to visit in Australia:  Uncle Tom, Aunt Nida, and, of course, Mochi!  Since they know some of these restaurants, they might give us some tasty suggestions and show us how wonderful Sydney, Australia can be to visit.

The only thing holding this trip back is money, and money is a problem!  But this trip is something that can’t be done in the United States of America.  Australia is very different from anything in the USA.  The trip would be a learning experience for all of us.  We can look for air flight specials online to make the trip cheaper.  Even though it is expensive, it’s the trip of a LIFETIME!

Grace - 5th grade Descriptive Prompt

K-State College
By: Grace Denson
Composition grade 5 – Descriptive writing prompt
September 23, 2011

Kansas State University (also known as K-State) is a rather large college in the small town of Manhattan, Kansas. K-State is very large and beautiful. K-State is an older college with many old and beautiful elements such as tall, beautiful white columns and broad staircases and entryways. The campus houses the biggest library you can imagine. This library is several stories high with many columns and a grand entryway. The shelves are so tall, they touch the ceiling. Each shelf loaded with as many books as it can hold. There is one part of this library I feel like I can’t leave: the study room. This room has ceilings that seem to touch the sky. At almost the ceiling, there are clear glass windows to let the light through. Even though K-State has many old building and architectural details, the population is mainly young college students. The young college students add the life and vitality to the beautiful buildings.

Grace's Composition - The Inventions of Thomas Edison

The Inventions of Thomas Edison

 Grace Elizabeth Denson

5th Grade Composition – Unit 2

Research Paper

September 10, 2011

Do you know who would have said this, “Genius is only one percent inspiration, and ninety-nine percent perspiration?”  The first thing to come to your mind might be an inventor; you’re right because it was Thomas Edison!  Thomas Edison, known as the Wizard of Menlo Park, was one of the most industrious inventors known to the world.  He invented the light bulb, the phonograph, and the kinetoscope (an early form of a movie projector), and many other things.  This ingenious inventor had lots of inspiration and put in plenty of perspiration to make so many wonderful inventions.
Thomas Edison is best known for inventing the world’s first electric light bulb.   Inventing the light bulb was a hard task.  Edison made it even harder when he boasted to reporters his invention was complete when it wasn’t.  Edison had created the glass bulb, but he needed to find the right filament (material) to make the bulb light up.  Edison tried everything from human hair to wood.  Finally he found the perfect material: copper wire.  Edison couldn’t wait to share his invention with the world.
Edison’s new electric lights were much safer than gas lights, kerosene lanterns, or arch lights. The new electric light bulbs wouldn’t start fires, blacken walls, or give people headaches from the fumes and they lasted much longer. Thomas Edison put up lots of his new electric lights for the Christmas season in Menlo Park. Hundreds of people swarmed to Menlo Park to see the lights and were amazed.  Thank-you Thomas Edison, for lighting up the world!
Another of Edison's inventions was the phonograph.  There was a large demand for music, but there was no way to record it.  Thomas Edison created the answer, the phonograph. He began to experiment with the idea while working with telegraph transmitters by trying to record messages. Once he figured out how to record words, he tried recording music.   Edison’s first song to be recorded was “Mary Had A Little Lamb.”  Soon Edison made a recording machine that worked like this: when you spoke into a mouthpiece it would scratch the vibrations into a tin foil cylinder.  Then the phonograph could play back the message or music many times. Edison also experimented with putting a smaller version to make talking dolls, but it was too fragile.
Thomas Edison got good results for his hard work on the phonograph. The public loved the phonograph because it meant you didn’t have to go to a concert to hear music. In fact, in some public places, there would be a phonograph that would play music in headphones for twenty-five cents.  Lots of people loved the phonograph so much, they wanted them for home.  People enjoyed music so much in their own homes, and eventually the phonograph was improved and it became the inspiration for the radio.
Finally, Thomas Edison was inspired to make pictures into movies. He found that if he put picture film onto a reel and moved it quickly in front of a light, the pictures would seem to be moving.  Thomas Edison invented the machine, called the kinetoscope to show the film reel up on a large screen, making a movie.  Now that Edison had made the kinetoscope machine, he built a studio room to make movies.  It even had adjustable windows.
It sounds like a successful invention, but it actually didn’t go over well because there was a problem.  The film reel was a curved surface, but the movie screen was a flat surface, so the images that showed through the kinetoscope onto the screen were blurry.  Also, this invention wasn’t as popular because the average man could not afford to buy a kinetoscope and also because it was too big to fit in most homes.   There weren’t too many commercial uses for the invention yet either, people just really weren’t ready for movies.  Another inventor, Mr. Kodak, was already working on inventing film that wasn’t as blurry, and other inventors used Edison’s kinetoscope as the inspiration to improve movie cameras and projectors.
The lightbulb, the phonograph, and the kinetoscope were three of many inventions that Thomas Edison made during his lifetime.  He made more things than any inventor in history.  Thomas Edison used inspiration and a lot of hard work to improve the lives of people everywhere.

"Disney World"

"Disney World"
5th Grade Comp - Unit 3:3 Narrative Prompts
by Grace Elizabeth Denson
10 May 2011

One of my happiest times ever was going to "Walt Disney World" for the first time.  It felt like I was everywhere at once.  It felt like I was in a storybook.  We went there in celebration of Dad coming back.

I stepped off the plane nervously.  Once my foot touched solid ground, I felt my excitement bubble out of my head.  I couldn't wait!  Once I realized how big the huge amusement park was, I got excited.  We had to take a bus to get to each part.  I couldn't wait for tomorrow to come to have fun.

The next morning at Magic Kingdom, I wanted to go on and discover every ride.  Joseph and I ran Mom, Dad, and baby Kath all over the park.  We wanted to try everything.  (I'm not sure Mom and Dad wanted to go everywhere though!)  Magic Kingdom is my favorite park.

We went to all four parks:  Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Movie, and Animal Kingdom.  We sent Mom to go around Epcot.  Joseph and I were exhausted by the end of every day.  I really enjoyed going on Splash Mountain for the first time.  It was a roler coaster.  You float in a log and go up and down, weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!  It was a ton of fun.

I had the best time at Walt Disney World than anywhere I've ever been!  It was the best.  I would never forget.  I also had some souveniers:  a pair of pink mouse ears, a Jasmine doll, and all the autographs.  It was my happiest, best experience.  Joseph and I really knew why they call it "the place where dreams come true."  It really felt like it at the end of this vacation!
